A Big Reversal in the FDA

For more than two decades, many women have carried quiet fear about hormone therapy. They were told it was risky, even dangerous. Some were told to simply “push through” menopause. Others were told their symptoms were normal and something they just had to live with.

As a result, countless women have spent years struggling with hot flashes, poor sleep, brain fog, anxiety, and declining bone and heart health without knowing they had safe, effective options.

Today, the science tells a more complete story.

The Initial Fear

In the early 2000s, the Women’s Health Initiative study led to widespread concern about hormone therapy. Headlines warned of increased risks, and prescriptions dropped dramatically almost overnight.

But over time, researchers took a closer look at the data. They found that the study population did not represent the average woman entering menopause. The average participant was 63 years old, more than a decade past menopause, and many had underlying health risks that influenced the results.

This mattered, because timing plays a major role in how hormone therapy affects the body.

The Research Findings

Follow-up research and randomized studies have shown a different picture for women who start hormone therapy within 10 years of menopause or before age 60.

In this group, hormone therapy has been associated with:

  • Reduced all-cause mortality

  • Fewer bone fractures

  • Lower rates of fatal cardiovascular events

  • Reduced cognitive decline

  • Lower Alzheimer’s disease risk

For many healthy women in this window, the benefits outweigh the risks when therapy is carefully administered and monitored.

This is not about a one-size-fits-all solution. It is about individualized care, appropriate hormone lab panels, and clinical treatment plans.

The FDA’s Official Update

In November 2025, the FDA announced it would begin removing broad black box warnings from hormone therapy used for menopause. This decision followed updated evidence showing that, for many women, hormone therapy is safe and beneficial when started at the appropriate time.

This shift reflects years of additional research and a growing medical consensus that the early fear did not apply to most women seeking relief from menopausal symptoms.

The Effects of misinformation

For years, many women suffered in silence because they believed treatment was too dangerous to consider.

They lived with:

  • Debilitating hot flashes

  • Chronic sleep disruption

  • Brain fog and memory concerns

  • Mood changes and anxiety

  • Loss of bone density

  • Increased cardiovascular risk

Menopause is a natural transition. But unnecessary suffering should never be considered normal or acceptable.

Our approach

At Carolina Hormone and Health Center, we have spent more than 13 years helping women navigate menopause with clarity and confidence. Our approach is grounded in research, clinical experience, and deep understanding of what women are going through.

A consultation is not a commitment to treatment. It is a conversation. It is a space to ask questions, understand your options, and decide what feels right for your body and your life.

Every woman deserves to feel heard, informed, and supported during this stage of life.
