You have seen the words everywhere.
AHA. BHA. PHA. Glycolic. Salicylic. Lactic.
Everyone is talking about skincare acids. But nobody explains which one is actually meant for you.
Here is the simple version.
What Does a Skincare Acid Even Do?
Think of your skin like a sidewalk.
Over time, dead skin cells pile up on top, like leaves that never get swept away. Your skin gets dull. Congested. Uneven. And your favorite products stop working because they cannot get through the buildup.
Skincare acids sweep the sidewalk. They dissolve the dead cells, speed up your skin’s natural renewal process, and let fresh, healthy skin come through.
The trick is knowing which acid sweeps which kind of mess.
AHA – For Dry, Dull, and Sun-Damaged Skin
AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acid.
It works on the surface of your skin. It brightens, smooths, and fades dark spots. It also tells your skin to make more collagen over time — which means fewer fine lines.
The three you will see most often:
Glycolic Acid is the strongest. It has the tiniest molecules so it gets deep fast. Great for texture and tone — but start slow if your skin is sensitive.
Lactic Acid is gentler. It exfoliates and hydrates at the same time. Perfect for dry skin that wants to glow without getting irritated.
Mandelic Acid is the slowest and mildest of the three. It is ideal for acne-prone skin or skin that tends to darken after a breakout.
One important thing: AHAs make your skin more sensitive to the sun. SPF every morning is not optional when you are using one.
AHA is your acid if: Your skin looks dull, feels rough, has fine lines, or shows sun damage.
BHA – For Oily, Acne-Prone, and Congested Skin
BHA stands for Beta Hydroxy Acid.
There is really only one: Salicylic Acid.
Here is what makes it different. BHA is oil-soluble, which means it can travel inside your pores and clean them out from the inside. AHA can only work on the surface. BHA goes deeper.
If your skin is oily, congested, or breaking out regularly, this is the ingredient that gets to the actual source of the problem.
It clears clogged pores. Reduces blackheads and whiteheads. Calms redness. And helps prevent new breakouts before they start.
BHA is your acid if: You have oily or acne-prone skin, visible pores, blackheads, or regular breakouts.
PHA – For Sensitive, Rosacea-Prone, and Post-Treatment Skin
PHA stands for Poly Hydroxy Acid.
Think of it as AHA’s gentler, kinder little sibling.
PHA molecules are bigger, so they work slowly and stay on the outer surface of the skin. That means you still get real exfoliation, but without the stinging, redness, or irritation that stronger acids can cause.
It also does something no other exfoliating acid does: it hydrates your skin while it works.
The two PHAs you will see most are Gluconolactone and Lactobionic Acid. Both deliver smoother, clearer skin, just without the drama.
This is also the acid we recommend most for clients who have just had a facial treatment like microneedling or a chemical peel. It supports healing without pushing the skin too hard.
PHA is your acid if: Your skin is sensitive, reactive, rosacea-prone, or you are recovering from a procedure.
So Which One Is Right for You?
Here is the short version:
Dull, dry, or aging skin – Start with Lactic Acid. Move to Glycolic when your skin is ready.
Oily, congested, or breaking out – Salicylic Acid is your best friend.
Sensitive, reactive, or post-procedure – PHA all the way.
Combination skin – You might need more than one. That is where a professional consultation makes all the difference.
One More Thing Most People Get Wrong
They go too fast.
Start with once or twice a week. Let your skin adjust. Build up slowly over several weeks. If your skin feels tight, dry, or irritated, pull back and focus on your barrier first.
And remember: medical-grade acids are not the same as what you find at the drugstore. The concentrations are higher. The formulations are smarter. And when they are matched to your specific skin by someone who knows what they are looking at, the results are in a completely different league.
